Freetown, Sierra Leone — Police officers have arrested a commercial kekeh rider after discovering an AK-47 rifle and 26 rounds of ammunition hidden in his possession at a checkpoint in Ferry Junction.
The arrest occurred on Thursday, 16 July 2026, during a routine security operation. According to the Sierra Leone Police, Sub-Inspector Mustapha Sesay, the checkpoint commander, grew suspicious when the suspect, identified as Ibrahim Badamasi, attempted to conceal a bag under a parked vehicle.
Officers promptly searched the bag and recovered the AK-47 rifle along with 26 rounds of live ammunition. Badamasi was arrested immediately and transferred to Ross Road Police Station, where he remains in custody pending further investigations.
The Ferry Junction checkpoint was strategically set up by the Local Unit Commander of the Harbour Police Division, CSP Fayia David Joshua, as part of broader efforts to bolster security and public safety in the area.
AIG Brima Kanneh, the Regional Commander for Freetown-East, praised the officers for their professionalism and vigilance.
“This swift action demonstrates effective policing,” he said, urging all personnel to remain alert and proactive in protecting lives and property.
Residents familiar with the suspect described him as a quiet commercial kekeh operator frequently seen at the PWD Junction Ataya Base. Many expressed surprise at his arrest, noting that he rarely interacted with others.
Police investigations are continuing to trace the origin of the firearm, determine its intended use, and identify any possible accomplices.
The Sierra Leone Police reaffirmed their commitment to combating the illegal possession of firearms and ensuring peace and security across the country.
