Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio, Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government and President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, has arrived safely in Abuja, Nigeria, to participate in a high-level event celebrating the life, leadership, and enduring legacy of former Nigerian Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, GCFR.
The event honours General Abdulsalami Abubakar’s remarkable contributions to democratic governance, peacebuilding, and regional stability. Widely regarded as the architect of Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999, the former Nigerian leader remains one of Africa’s most respected statesmen and a steadfast advocate for peace, dialogue, and good governance across the continent.
As a leading champion of democracy, peace, and constitutional governance in West Africa, President Bio has been invited as Guest of Honour and will deliver a goodwill message reflecting on the distinguished legacy of General Abdulsalami Abubakar and his profound contribution to democratic consolidation, conflict resolution, and regional integration in Africa.
The high-level gathering will bring together an array of eminent African leaders and statesmen, including General Yakubu Gowon, GCFR, former Head of State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; Thabo Mbeki, former President of the Republic of South Africa; and His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Upon arrival at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, President Bio was warmly received by Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Julius F. Sandy, alongside General Abdulsalami Abubakar and senior officials of Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
President Bio’s participation in the event reflects Sierra Leone’s continued commitment to promoting democratic governance, peacebuilding, and regional cooperation while recognizing African leaders whose service has helped shape a more stable and prosperous continent.
