Freetown, Sierra Leone – April 13, 2026 – The All Peoples Congress (APC) has released an official statement addressing the ongoing visit of the International Moral Guarantors to Sierra Leone, while strongly reaffirming its position on the need for genuine electoral reform.
In the statement dated 13 April 2026 and signed by Lansana Dumbuya Esq., National Secretary General of the APC, the party informed the public and its membership about the visit, which was convened in response to concerns raised by the APC regarding the Agreement for National Unity (ANU) and the implementation of the Tripartite Committee Recommendations.
The APC noted that the visit follows sustained engagement by the party with both national stakeholders and international partners. It highlighted what it described as a “lack of meaningful progress” in implementing agreed electoral reforms and the growing challenges facing Sierra Leone’s democratic process.
“Since the signing of the ANU and submission of the report of the Tripartite Committee, the APC has consistently acted in good faith,” the statement read. “However, the Party remains deeply concerned that key provisions of the agreements, particularly those relating to electoral reform, transparency, and institutional accountability, have not been adequately implemented.”
Concerns Over Electoral Commissioner Appointment
A major point of contention raised in the document is the recent appointment of Edmond Alpha as Chief Electoral Commissioner. The APC believes this appointment undermines public confidence in the electoral process at a critical time when trust in democratic institutions needs to be strengthened.
In response to these developments, the APC announced it has taken the “difficult but necessary decision” to withdraw its Members of Parliament and Local Council representatives from governance structures, pending meaningful progress on the implementation of agreed reforms.
Commitment to Peace and Unity
Despite the strong position taken, the APC reiterated its commitment to peace, national unity, and democratic governance. The party emphasized that these principles must be underpinned by trust, transparency, and good faith.
The statement also acknowledged the difficult living conditions faced by the general public amid high tensions and expressed hope for a meaningful outcome from this week’s engagements with the International Moral Guarantors.
“The APC welcomes the International Moral Guarantors and urges the mission to facilitate meaningful and sincere dialogue to ensure that the commitments made under the ANU are fully implemented,” it stated.
The party further urged all its members and supporters to remain calm, disciplined, and united** as efforts continue to safeguard Sierra Leone’s democratic future.
Next Steps
The APC indicated that updates on the continuity of its lower-level elections and the way forward will be communicated after the conclusion of this important visit.
The statement concluded with a rallying call: “This is a defining moment for our Party, as we stand firm in unity, action, progress, and commitment.”
This development comes at a sensitive period in Sierra Leone’s political landscape, as the country grapples with implementing post-election agreements and strengthening democratic institutions ahead of future electoral cycles.
