Sierra Leone’s Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu, and Minister of Information, Chernor Bah, have confirmed a mining collapse at Komaro in the Nimikoro Chiefdom, Kono District.
Preliminary reports indicate that around one hundred artisanal miners are believed to be trapped beneath the debris, though officials say no fatalities have yet been confirmed.
Rescue operations are said to be underway as authorities work to assess the full extent of the disaster.
Ing. Murtada Tunis, Country Manager of Gold Lion Mining Company, formerly known as Wongor, attributed the collapse to illegal mining activities.
He stated that the company had repeatedly issued warnings over the past months about unregulated operations in the area.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the dangers of illicit mining in Kono, where poor safety standards and encroachment on licensed sites continue to threaten lives and disrupt legal operations.
