Freetown, Sierra Leone – October 9, 2024 -The West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) has announced that it has uncovered a suspicious malpractice within its IT department related to grade processing for the 2024 WASSCE Government results.
According to a press release signed by the acting head of WAEC, M. John-Langba, the council suspects that some staff members and examiners were involved in unethical activities, altering grades for students who did not deserve them.
“Thorough investigations were conducted before the release of the 2024 Government WASSCE results,” John-Langba stated.
He emphasized that the delay in the release was due to the discovery of examiners fraudulently assigning undeserved grades to candidates.
WAEC has since corrected the situation and ensured that all affected candidates now have the grades they rightly deserve.
The council also issued a stern warning to anyone found involved in such malpractices, stating that they will face severe legal penalties.
“Any candidate whose name appears in connection with these activities will have their results investigated or withheld,” John-Langba warned.
WAEC further advised its staff to maintain integrity and avoid engaging in any unethical activities that could undermine the credibility of the country’s educational system. The council has worked with international bodies to reverse any tampered data before publishing the final results online.
The statement concluded with a call for continued cooperation from the public as WAEC upholds the standards of examinations in Sierra Leone.
