Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh yesterday presided over the inauguration of the newly elected officials of the 5th Council of the Eastern Region in Sierra Leone’s 2nd Republic.
The inauguration took place at the Kenema City Hall, marking a crucial moment for local governance.
Among the attendees were Mayors, District Chairmen, Deputies, and Councillors, who were officially sworn in to assume their respective roles.
Notably, six Councilors affiliated with the All People’s Congress (APC) from Kono district participated in the ceremony by taking the Oath of office.
The presence of these APC Councilors holds significance, as it contradicts recent directives from the party’s leadership. The APC hierarchy had previously called for a boycott of all government-related activities. However, these Councilors chose to participate in the inauguration despite this call.
The decision by these APC Councilors to partake in the ceremony has exposed divisions within the party. Party elders, in a public statement, reaffirmed their commitment to the boycott and outlined their demands. Central to these demands is the release of election results from individual polling centers. The elders have vowed to sustain their boycott until these demands are met.
This inauguration event unfolded against the backdrop of the controversial June 24th Elections, which have been marked by disputes and uncertainties.
As the new Council members assume their responsibilities, the political landscape remains dynamic, with the APC’s internal dynamics adding further complexity to the ongoing situation.
