In a formal letter addressed to Dr. Julius F. Sandy, Secretary to the President, Samen J. Sanpha Koroma, PhD, announced his resignation as Chancellor of the University of Sierra Leone.
Expressing deep regret, Dr. Koroma cited failed attempts at securing a personal audience as the impetus for his decision.
Dr. Koroma, in his letter, conveyed appreciation for the appointment bestowed upon him by His Excellency the President to oversee affairs at his alma mater. However, he lamented the chaotic conclusion of his tenure, attributing it primarily to what he labeled as “gross interference” by the supervising Ministry.
The resignation of Dr. Koroma raises questions regarding the level of autonomy and external influence within the University of Sierra Leone’s administration. Despite repeated efforts to address concerns directly with the presidency, Dr. Koroma’s decision to step down underscores the challenges faced by academic leaders in navigating bureaucratic hurdles and maintaining institutional integrity.
Meanwhile, Paramount Chief Dr. Magrette Darboh has been inaugurated as the new Chancellor of the University of Sierra Leone. Dr. Darboh’s ascension to this prestigious position is marked by her extensive background and expertise in education.
With a master’s degree in Curriculum Development from the University of Sussex, United Kingdom, and a Ph.D. in Education specializing in Early Childhood Education from Fourah Bay College (FBC), Dr. Darboh brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to her new role. Her illustrious career includes serving as a lecturer at the former Freetown Teachers’ College, now known as Freetown Polytechnic, and as a Lecturer in Early Childcare and Development at FBC.
