A Woman Police Constable (WPC) lost her life in a fatal road accident at the Mange Burreh Police Checkpoint in Port Loko District. WPC Jenneh Mansaray, with service number 21676, was tragically killed while on duty when she was struck by a Mercedes Benz Tipper Truck, registered ATR 087.
The vehicle was driven by Mustapha Jalloh, a resident of Devil Hole Junction in the Western Rural Area.
The incident occurred around 5:30 PM as WPC Mansaray, who was attached to the Operational Support Division (OSD) at the North West Regional Headquarters in Port Loko, was performing her routine duties.
Following instructions from her superior to open the checkpoint, Mansaray moved to clear the crash barrier to allow the truck to pass. Unfortunately, the driver accelerated prematurely, resulting in the truck hitting and fatally injuring the officer.
Eyewitnesses reported that the driver continued driving after the accident, seemingly unaware of what had occurred. He was later apprehended by authorities after a pursuit. The Port Loko Police Division is currently investigating the incident.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Aminata Bangura, the District Traffic Officer (DTO) for Port Loko, described the accident as one of the most horrific she has encountered in her tenure.
ASP Bangura disclosed that the driver was transporting twenty live cows from Gbom Samba to Kamakuwie when the accident occurred. He has been arrested and remains in custody.
WPC Mansaray’s body was transported to the Connaught Mortuary in Freetown for a post-mortem examination and has since been laid to rest in her hometown of Bo, Southern Province.
Speaking to the Sierra Leone News Agency (SLENA), ASP Bangura stressed that reckless and inattentive driving likely played a significant role in the accident.
She assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted and that the driver would face legal proceedings.
ASP Bangura also issued a stern warning to all motorists to properly maintain their vehicles, avoid speeding, and exercise caution, especially during the rainy season, to ensure road safety.
