Freetown, Sierra Leone – In a significant step forward in the fight against Mpox, Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health, led by Dr. Austin Demby, has confirmed the arrival of an additional 50,000 doses of Mpox vaccines.
The latest consignment comes through partnerships with Africa CDC, the World Health Organization (WHO), Gavi – the Vaccine Alliance, and UNICEF.
The Ministry says this new batch of vaccines will further strengthen the country’s robust response efforts, which have already been credited with a steady decline in positive cases nationwide.
Health officials note that alongside existing measures — such as active surveillance, isolation, and treatment — these additional vaccines will help accelerate efforts to curb transmission, reduce fatalities, and bring the outbreak under control.
Despite high demand across the African continent for the limited supply of Mpox vaccines, Sierra Leone has, within just six months, successfully secured over 200,000 doses through coordinated efforts with key international partners.
“This achievement demonstrates the government’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the health and wellbeing of Sierra Leoneans,” said a Health Ministry spokesperson. “We are working tirelessly to ensure that no one is left behind in our fight to end this outbreak.”
Health authorities continue to urge the public to cooperate with ongoing surveillance and vaccination campaigns, stressing that the collective efforts of both the government and the people remain crucial to fully defeating Mpox.
