Sierra Leone has secured the position of Africa’s third most powerful merchant marine nation in 2026, according to a new report published by Business Insider Africa. The country is also ranked 32nd globally, trailing only Liberia and Nigeria on the continent.
The latest ranking underscores Sierra Leone’s expanding footprint in the global shipping industry and highlights its growing role within West Africa’s developing blue economy. Analysts attribute the country’s performance to the steady growth of its merchant fleet, which includes oil tankers, cargo vessels, and container ships.
Maritime experts say a robust merchant fleet is a critical marker of economic resilience, enabling nations to capture more value from international trade. Sierra Leone’s continued investment in expanding its fleet is seen as a move to reduce dependence on foreign shipping operators while increasing revenue from maritime activities.
The report follows a series of government-led reforms aimed at strengthening maritime infrastructure and boosting shipping capacity. These measures form part of a wider strategy to position the country as a competitive hub for regional and global trade.
Recent diplomatic engagements have also reinforced this ambition, with Sierra Leone promoting itself as a strategic gateway connecting international markets to Africa.
With preparations underway for the 79th ECOWAS Summit and ongoing developments in the maritime sector, Sierra Leone is steadily enhancing its standing in African trade and logistics, signaling its emergence as a rising force in global shipping.
