FREETOWN/CONAKRY, March 17, 2026 – Julius Maada Bio has joined regional counterparts in committing to a peaceful and diplomatic approach to resolving border tensions within the Mano River Union (MRU), following high-level talks in Conakry.
The Sierra Leonean leader met with Joseph Nyuma Boakai and Mamadi Doumbouya, where the three Heads of State agreed to prioritise dialogue and cooperation over the use of force in addressing disputes along their shared borders.
In a joint communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining the current border positions while negotiations continue toward a mutually acceptable and lasting settlement. The decision is aimed at preserving trade, commerce, and longstanding cultural ties among communities in border areas, including those linked to Sierra Leone.
The discussions were held under the framework of the Mano River Union and were prompted by recent incidents that have heightened tensions in parts of the region.
For Sierra Leone, the agreement underscores a broader commitment to regional stability, with President Bio emphasising the importance of peaceful coexistence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. The leaders also pledged to strengthen joint security efforts to address cross-border threats such as terrorism, organised crime, and trafficking.
Key outcomes of the meeting include plans to intensify joint border patrols, enhance intelligence sharing, and improve coordination between local authorities and security agencies. The three countries also agreed to promote economic development in border communities to support livelihoods and reinforce peaceful relations.
In addition, relevant agencies have been directed to accelerate dialogue and technical work on border clarification and demarcation, with support from regional and international partners.
The leaders further agreed to convene an MRU summit within one month to revitalise regional cooperation and sustain dialogue on peace, security, and development.
Officials say the outcome of the Conakry talks is expected to ease tensions affecting Sierra Leone and its neighbours, restore confidence among border communities, and support the resumption of cross-border economic activities.
