Freetown, Sierra Leone – 24 March 2026
The Government of Sierra Leone has released an official statement addressing the ongoing return of Sierra Leonean nationals from neighbouring Guinea, following operations by Guinean authorities to clear informal settlements and identify undocumented foreign residents.
According to a press release issued today by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education, the Government was informed by Guinean authorities about operations in the Boulbinet port area of Conakry on 23 March 2026. During the exercise, several Sierra Leoneans were among those affected, including individuals lacking valid documentation.
Sierra Leoneans possessing valid documents were released immediately, while those without proper documentation have been scheduled for repatriation to Sierra Leone.
The Government, through its Embassy in Conakry, has been actively engaging with Guinean authorities to ensure the process is conducted in an orderly and humane manner, with full respect for the rights and dignity of Sierra Leonean citizens.
“The return process is being jointly managed by officials of both countries at the border,” the statement noted. Sierra Leonean authorities are currently receiving, screening, and documenting the returnees, while also facilitating their safe and dignified repatriation to their respective communities.
As of 24 March 2026, a total of 942 Sierra Leoneans, including adults and children, have been received at the Kambia border point, with onward arrangements already in progress.
The Ministry emphasized that the Government will continue to monitor the situation closely and maintain diplomatic engagement with Guinea to guarantee due process and the continued protection of Sierra Leonean nationals.
The public has been urged to remain calm and to rely only on verified information from official government channels.
This development comes amid broader regional efforts to manage migration and informal settlements along the shared border between the two West African nations. Officials have assured citizens that all necessary support is being provided to ensure the welfare of those returning home.
The full press release was approved and signed off by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education.
