In a significant development for Sierra Leone’s political landscape, the Government of Sierra Leone (GOSL) and the All Peoples Congress (APC) have pledged to continue their collaborative efforts toward ensuring electoral justice, reforms, and national unity.
This commitment was formalized at the New Brookfields Hotel in Freetown.
Joint Efforts for Electoral Reform
Both parties have reiterated their dedication to the Tripartite Committee, a body established under Resolution Three of the Agreement for National Unity. The committee’s role is to scrutinize the electoral systems, structures, and processes from the 2023 multi-tier electoral cycle. It aims to address issues related to elections and results management, including the collation, verification, and publication of electoral data, ensuring alignment with international best practices.
Progress and Future Directions
Over the past six months, the Tripartite Committee has achieved considerable milestones, including finalizing its Terms of Reference, developing key documents, conducting nationwide stakeholder outreach, and consulting with international experts. The focus has been on elections management, institutional, and legal reforms. The committee is now nearing the completion of its mandate and is preparing to present a comprehensive report to the President of Sierra Leone.
Commitment to Inclusive Democracy
The GOSL and the APC are optimistic that the implementation of the committee’s recommendations will significantly enhance the fairness and transparency of future elections, thereby strengthening Sierra Leone’s democracy. Both parties are committed to these reforms as essential steps toward the nation’s continued development and stability.
Unwavering Dedication to National Unity
Both the GOSL and the APC have reaffirmed their unwavering commitment to peace, electoral justice, and national cohesion. They have condemned any attempts to incite violence or disrupt the democratic process and pledged full adherence to all resolutions in the Agreement for National Unity.
Appreciation and Call to Action
Expressing gratitude to development partners, experts, and moral guarantors for their support, the GOSL and the APC have called on all stakeholders and citizens to maintain peace and back the crucial electoral reforms that will shape Sierra Leone’s democratic future. Together, they are committed to building a stronger, more inclusive, and democratic Sierra Leone.
