Freetown, Sierra Leone – April 2, 2026 – The Government of Sierra Leone has officially declared Friday, April 3, 2026, and Monday, April 6, 2026, as public holidays across the country to mark Good Friday and Easter Monday, respectively.
In a public notice issued from State House in Freetown, the general public has been informed that these two days will be observed as national holidays.
The announcement comes just one day before the first holiday takes effect.
Good Friday, falling on April 3, commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, while Easter Monday, on April 6, celebrates the resurrection and is traditionally a day of rest and family gatherings in many Christian communities.
The notice, bearing the seal of the Office of the President, was dated April 2, 2026, and signed by a representative of the presidency.
It emphasizes that both days are holidays “throughout the country,” meaning government offices, public institutions, and many private businesses are expected to remain closed or operate with limited services.
Citizens are advised to plan accordingly, especially those relying on public transportation, banking services, or government offices, as these will likely be unavailable during the holiday period.
This declaration aligns with Sierra Leone’s tradition of recognizing major Christian observances as public holidays, reflecting the country’s significant Christian population alongside its multi-religious society.
