Freetown, 18 August 2025 – Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Youth Affairs has partnered with the Economic and Commercial Counseling Center of the country’s Embassy in Guangzhou, China, to launch a major youth empowerment initiative centered on the electric vehicle (EV) industry.
The two parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that will provide 500 electric cars, 1,000 motorbikes, 500 tricycles, and the establishment of a modern training facility for young people to gain technical skills in EV maintenance and operation.
Speaking at the signing, Minister of Youth Affairs, Ibrahim Sannoh, said the project will create opportunities for Sierra Leone’s youth to participate in a fast-growing global industry while supporting the government’s development agenda.
“This initiative is directly linked to President Bio’s ‘Big 5’ game changers, particularly youth employment and human capital development,” he noted.
A representative from the Chinese side described the agreement as “groundbreaking,” adding that it will offer Sierra Leonean youth new opportunities and a brighter future.
Officials stressed that beyond infrastructure and industrial growth, the project emphasizes human resource development and knowledge transfer, which are vital for long-term sustainability.
The MOU also reflects Sierra Leone’s continued strong partnership with China in driving national development.
