Muslims in Sierra Leone are expected to celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr on Friday, March 20, 2026, after authorities in Saudi Arabia announced that the crescent moon was not sighted on Wednesday.
The announcement means that Thursday, March 19, will be observed as the 30th and final day of Ramadan fasting, with Eid festivities beginning on Friday.
In Sierra Leone, where Islam is the faith of the majority of the population, Ramadan is observed with daily fasting, prayers, acts of charity and family gatherings. Throughout the holy month, many Muslims wake before dawn for the pre-fast meal and break their fast at sunset, often in the company of relatives, neighbours and members of their communities.
The end of Ramadan is marked by Eid-ul-Fitr, one of the most important dates on the Islamic calendar.
In Sierra Leone, the celebration is usually observed with special congregational prayers, visits to family homes, charitable giving, and communal meals, while children often wear new clothes to mark the occasion.
Saudi Arabia’s moon-sighting decision is closely watched by many Muslim communities around the world, including Sierra Leone, although local religious authorities may also issue guidance on the final observance.
With the moon not sighted in Saudi Arabia, Muslims following that announcement will now complete a full 30 days of fasting before joining in Eid celebrations on Friday.
