In a poignant moment of reflection, Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio recently visited the graveside of his beloved mother, Yei Amie Lumba Navo Bio.
The visit, just before his scheduled public lecture at his Alma Mater, the American University in Washington DC, allowed him to pay tribute to the woman whose wisdom and guidance shaped his life.
Yei Amie passed away 23 years ago during Sierra Leone’s decade-long civil war while in the United States.
President Bio has made it a tradition to visit her final resting place over the years, but this time, the experience was profoundly different.
As he stood by her graveside, President Bio found himself transported through the chapters of his life, from infancy to adulthood.
He vividly recalled his mother’s gentle voice and the profound impact of her words on his education and personal growth. Despite her lack of formal education, Yei Amie instilled in him an insatiable thirst for knowledge and a strong belief in the power of an unshackled mind.
Her enduring message, “God and Education are the light that will guide your way,” continues to guide President Bio’s life and work. She played an instrumental role in nurturing his brilliant and curious mind, helping him navigate the challenges and victories along the way. Her legacy lives on through the President’s unwavering commitment to education and personal development.
Although Yei Amie has passed on, her spirit remains ever-present in the lessons she imparted and the gentle guidance she provided. President Bio pledged to honor her memory through his actions, ensuring that her love and wisdom continue to shine through in everything he does.
As the President concluded his visit, he bid farewell to his mother with a heartfelt message: “Rest in Eternal Peace, Yei Amie.”
The graveside visit was a moment of deep introspection and a touching tribute to the enduring influence of a mother’s love and wisdom on the life of a nation’s leader
