Freetown, 19th August 2024 — The Petroleum Regulatory Agency (PRA) has announced an immediate suspension on new applications for the construction of gas stations in the Western Area and along the entire stretch of the Freetown-Masiaka Highway.
In a statement released today, the PRA emphasized that this new regulatory measure is designed to curb the proliferation of unauthorized gas stations that fail to meet suitability guidelines, safety standards, and fair trade practices.
“The agency is taking decisive action to ensure that all gas stations operating within these areas comply with established regulations,” said a spokesperson for the PRA. “As of today, we will no longer accept any new applications for the construction of gas stations in these specified areas.”
The agency also warned that all unregistered gas stations currently under construction must halt operations immediately.
“Any ongoing construction without the necessary approvals and permits will be deemed illegal and subject to enforcement actions,” the spokesperson added.
The PRA’s directive extends to all unregistered and unlicensed gas stations within the Western Area and the Freetown-Masiaka Highway corridor.
The agency urged construction firms, oil suppliers, and dealers to comply with the new regulations or face significant consequences.
