Yesterday, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and Authority of Heads of State and Government issued a stern seven-day ultimatum to the Niger Republic military, demanding the release and reinstatement of President Mohammed Bazoum as the legitimate Head of State and government. However, the Niger military swiftly rejected the call and issued a warning to ECOWAS, cautioning against any military intervention.
“We want to once more remind ECOWAS or any other adventurer of our firm determination to defend our homeland,” stated the defiant military, signaling their unwavering resolve to maintain control.
They further emphasized the potential consequences of foreign military intervention, warning that it could lead to severe ramifications, including the massacre of the Nigerien population and chaos.
The current political crisis in Niger was sparked by the toppling of President Bazoum last Wednesday by members of the presidential guard, led by Abdourahamane Tiani, who has declared himself the country’s new leader.
Despite his claim, the international community has not recognized him as the legitimate leader, and ECOWAS has already threatened possible military intervention if the putschists do not hand back power by the specified deadline.
The situation has also caused concerns among Western allies of Niger, leading them to suspend aid to the country or issue threats to do so, adding to the mounting pressure on the Niger Republic military to resolve the crisis peacefully.
