In a recent official statement released two days ago, Lansana Dumbuya, the National Secretary General of the main opposition All People’s Congress (APC) party, has strongly condemned the reported constitutional review initiated by the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) government.
Dumbuya asserts that this action is a deliberate and callous attempt by the regime to spark a constitutional crisis and endanger the nation’s peace and security.
The APC party has expressed grave concerns about this development and called upon the government to halt the process immediately.
The APC party characterizes this move as a calculated and insensitive maneuver by the current administration, with the apparent objective of inciting a constitutional upheaval and undermining the stability and harmony of the nation.
Critics of President Bio’s leadership, which is under the SLPP banner, contend that these efforts are driven by the President’s desire to legitimize his hold on power, particularly in light of unpublished results from the June 24th, 2023, election, which allegedly indicate that the President did not secure victory.
The situation has further escalated due to the refusal of the main opposition APC party to return to parliament in protest of the alleged election irregularities.
With President Bio’s push to amend the country’s Constitution in the absence of the APC party’s participation, concerns have grown that these actions could push the nation closer to the brink of conflict and instability.
