The National Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NPRA) has announced an immediate nationwide moratorium on the construction of new gas stations across the country.
According to the Authority, the decision was taken in response to the rapid increase in unregistered and unauthorized fuel stations operating in violation of established safety regulations, suitability standards, and fair trade practices.
As part of the directive, all existing and pending applications for the construction of gas stations have been declared null and void.
The NPRA also ordered that any unregistered fuel stations currently under construction must immediately halt all building activities.
The Authority further stated that during the period of the moratorium, it will neither accept nor process new applications seeking approval to construct gas stations.
Officials explained that the suspension will allow regulators to carry out a comprehensive review of compliance with existing guidelines governing the establishment of fuel stations. Particular attention will be given to ensuring proper separation distances between gas stations and sensitive public facilities such as residential areas, schools, religious centers, health facilities, swamps, rights-of-way, and entertainment venues.
The NPRA warned that any individual or company found violating the directive by continuing or initiating new construction projects will be considered to be acting illegally and may face enforcement actions.
The Authority emphasized that the moratorium has been introduced in the public interest and urged construction companies, Oil Marketing Companies, and fuel dealers to strictly comply with the directive to avoid possible sanctions.
