The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has issued a public alert urging all citizens to take immediate precautionary measures in light of ongoing heavy rainfall.
The agency emphasizes the need for safety and minimizing risks associated with flooding, landslides, and other rain-related hazards.
Precautionary Measures:
Stay Informed:
“Monitor and act on the daily weather forecasts and warnings from the Sierra Leone Meteorological Agency (SLMet),” advises the NDMA. It is crucial to “act on National Disaster Management Agency advisories” to stay safe.
Avoid Flood-Prone Areas:
The NDMA warns residents to “steer clear of rivers, streams, and low-lying areas that are prone to flooding” and to “not attempt to cross flooded roads or bridges.”
Secure Your Property:
Citizens are urged to “ensure that gutters, drains, and downspouts are clear of debris to allow for proper water flow.” Additionally, moving valuable items to higher ground can prevent water damage. The agency also advises, “report electricity asset damage in your community to avoid electrocution.”
Avoid Outdoor Activities:
“Refrain from engaging in outdoor activities, especially near bodies of water or on slopes that may be prone to landslides,” the alert states.
Drive with Caution:
“If you must drive, do so carefully,” warns the NDMA. Drivers should be aware of the potential for hydroplaning and avoid driving through flooded areas. The use of headlights and maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles is also recommended.
Report Emergencies:
In case of emergencies, the NDMA can be contacted at 1199 (free on Africell), or at +23278388946 / +23278096975 / +23278303293.
By following these precautions, the NDMA aims to ensure the safety and well-being of communities during this period of heavy rainfall. “Stay safe and vigilant,” the agency advises.
