Freetown, Sierra Leone – May 22, 2025 — The National Telecommunications Commission (NatCA) has successfully intervened following widespread concern over recent data tariff hikes by Mobile Network Operators (MNOs).
In a decisive move, NatCA has directed all MNOs to reverse the changes to their data tariff plans, a decision that will take effect on Thursday, 23rd May 2025.
The price adjustments, which had triggered public outcry over affordability and limited data package choices, prompted swift action from the regulatory authority.
“We heard the concerns of consumers loud and clear,” NatCA stated. “Our engagement with the Mobile Network Operators has led to a reversal of the changes, ensuring customers continue to have access to flexible and affordable data options.”
NatCA reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with operators to ensure that future data plans align with market expectations and consumer needs.
“We remain dedicated to fostering a competitive and consumer-friendly telecom sector in Sierra Leone,” NatCA dded. “Our goal is to enhance service quality and uphold fairness across the industry.”
The Commission has also pledged ongoing dialogue with telecom providers to develop improved packages that reflect both consumer demands and market realities.
Earlier today Orange Sierra Leone announced a price increase for its widely-used Kolat Weekly Bundle, raising the cost from Le60 to Le100. The adjustment, which was supposed to rake effect this week, comes as the telecommunications company doubles the bundle’s internet speed from 1Mbps to 2Mbps.
This development follows NatCA’s recent initiatives to enhance transparency and fairness in the telecommunications sector. In December 2024, NatCA mandated that all MNOs strictly adhere to the validity periods advertised for their subscription plans, ensuring that data packages labeled as daily, weekly, or monthly genuinely reflect the specified duration.
Furthermore, NatCA has been actively working on implementing a Fair Usage Policy (FUP) to regulate individual data usage and promote equity among subscribers. While specific details about the FUP are still being finalized, NatCA has assured the public that updates will be provided once decisions are reached.
