The National Communications Authority (NatCA) has issued a new directive mandating all Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) in Sierra Leone to ensure that every subscriber links their SIM card to a valid National Identification Number (NIN).
In a public notice released on Friday, NatCA advised all mobile users to visit their nearest service provider outlets to complete the verification and update process. The regulatory body warned that beginning October 1, 2025, subscribers who fail to comply with the directive will face service interruptions.
NatCA emphasized that the move is part of ongoing efforts to enhance national security, improve digital identity systems, and curb the use of unregistered SIMs in fraudulent and criminal activities.
Additionally, the Authority has banned the street sale of pre-registered or pre-activated SIM cards, urging consumers to purchase SIMs only from authorized Mobile Network Operator locations.
“The public is strongly advised to comply with these new regulations to avoid disruption of mobile services,” the statement from NatCA read.
The announcement marks a major step in the country’s digital regulatory reforms, aligning with regional trends aimed at tightening oversight in the telecommunications sector.
