On 4 February 2025, the Irish Ambassador to Sierra Leone and Head of Mission, His Excellency, Ambassador Aidan Fitzpatrick, paid a courtesy call on the Minister of Finance, Mr. Sheku Ahmed Fantamadi Bangura.
In attendance were the Chief Economist, Mr. Alimamy Bangura and the Technical Adviser to the Minister, Dr. Franklin Sisabu Bendu. The Ambassador’s delegation included the Deputy Head of Mission and Head of Development, Ms. Carol Hannon, Development Specialist Officer and Ms. Wendy Jacobs, Áine Doody, Chris Pain from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ireland.
Discussions centred on bilateral issues and on deepening the relationship between Sierra Leone and the European Union. Ambassador Fitzpatrick informed the Minister that the Republic of Ireland will be taking over the Presidency of the European Union later in 2025, and this visit is meant to understand the key priorities of Government.
The Minister and Ambassador Fitzpatrick discussed the Government’s priorities in the national development plan and efforts to support the implementation of key projects.
The Hon. Minister expressed gratitude to the European Union for their continued support in advancing Sierra Leone’s economic development aspirations.
The Minister also informed the Ambassador that Sierra Leone will explore the facilities available in the European Investment Bank to support the implementation of the national development plan. The Minister also expressed appreciation for the resumption of budgetary support from the European Union.
The Chief Economist reiterated the importance of budgetary support in the delivery of services.
