Freetown, Sierra Leone – The Director of Communications in the Office of the President, Myk Berewa, has accused the previous All People’s Congress (APC) administration of laying the foundations for Sierra Leone’s kush epidemic.
Berewa said the highly addictive substance was already present in the country as far back as 2016, during the tenure of the former government.
He argued that the APC not only left behind a struggling economy but also created fertile ground for the spread of drug use through divided youth groups and entrenched street cliques.
In a strongly worded social media post, Berewa declared: “They claimed we weren’t doing anything about kush, but they left out that it was all part of the mess they created and left. Kush showed up in Salone in 2016. It wasn’t just austerity they dumped on us; they also left us with cliques.”
The Communications Director accused the opposition of downplaying its role in the crisis while shifting blame onto the current administration.
He maintained that today’s challenges are linked to networks and divisions fostered under the APC.
Berewa’s remarks come amid criticism that the Bio-led government has been slow in tackling kush. While acknowledging that the epidemic worsened in recent years, he insisted the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) inherited the problem and is now working to solve it.
