Port Loko, Sierra Leone – February 4, 2026: The Minister of Internal Affairs, Morie Lengor (Esq), together with the Director General of the Sierra Leone Correctional Service (SLCS), Joseph John Senessie, visited the Port Loko Correctional Centre following a riot incident that, fortunately, resulted in no deaths or escapes.
The disturbance, carried out by inmates, left the Centre’s administrative building completely burnt and destroyed, causing extensive damage to facilities.
During the inspection, the Minister and the Director General toured the compound to assess the level of infrastructural destruction.
Minister Lengor also addressed the inmates, urging them to embrace discipline, decency, obedience, and order while serving their sentences. Although expressing disappointment at their actions, he encouraged them to remain peaceful and law-abiding, reminding them that hope and optimism could eventually lead to their reintegration into society.
He referenced notable global figures who had endured imprisonment yet emerged stronger, advising inmates to remain productive during their incarceration.
The Minister and the Director General further commended the Correctional Officers and sister security forces—the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) and Sierra Leone Police (SLP)—for their professionalism and swift response in containing the situation. Their efforts, the Minister noted, were crucial in safeguarding public safety and preventing casualties or escapes. He encouraged them to continue their patriotic service to the nation with diligence.
The delegation also met with key stakeholders in Port Loko, including the Mayor of Port Loko City, the Provincial Secretary, the Assistant Inspector General (AIG), and the Local Unit Commander (LUC).
They expressed gratitude for the stakeholders’ invaluable support and timely intervention, which played a vital role in stabilizing the situation.
The visit underscored the government’s commitment to maintaining order within correctional facilities while reinforcing collaboration between security forces and local authorities.
