Freetown, 29th October 2025 —** The Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Conrad Sackey, has officially released the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) results, revealing a significant improvement in student performance nationwide.
Announcing the results at a press briefing on Wednesday, Minister Sackey disclosed that the national pass rate stands at 91 percent, marking one of the highest success rates in recent years.
He commended both students and educators for their dedication, while highlighting the exceptional performance of female candidates.
“Ten of the top sixteen candidates this year are girls,” he said, describing the achievement as a positive sign of growing gender equality in education.
Topping the 2025 BECE is Mariama Yelie Bangura of International Providence High School, who achieved an outstanding aggregate score of 7 — the best performance in the country.
This year, a total of 129,838 candidates — comprising 62,788 males and 67,050 females from 1,984 schools across Sierra Leone — sat for the examination, which was administered by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
The BECE serves as both a certification for junior secondary education and a qualification for admission into senior secondary schools. Minister Sackey praised the collective efforts of teachers, parents, and education officials for contributing to what he described as “a remarkable year of academic excellence.”
