The Secretary General of the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Umaru Napoleon Koroma, has called on Sierra Leoneans to set aside political differences and celebrate the “historic signing” of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact by President Julius Maada Bio in the United States.
Koroma emphasized that the agreement marks a significant milestone for the country’s future, particularly in addressing Sierra Leoneans’ rising concerns about electricity generation—a key focus of President Bio’s “Big Five” development agenda.
Sierra Leone recently secured a $480 million Energy Compact with the MCC, signed at the MCC Headquarters in Washington, D.C. The Ministry of Information and Civic Education issued a statement confirming that the Compact aims to bolster the country’s energy sector, enhancing electricity access in major towns and cities. The initiative is expected to benefit over 4 million Sierra Leoneans, unlocking new economic opportunities across the nation.
Speaking to the press, Koroma, who also serves as Deputy Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources, expressed his dismay at any opposition to the Compact.
He stressed the importance of national unity in welcoming this opportunity, despite certain conditions attached to the agreement.
He reassured the public that the government remains fully committed to meeting these conditions as part of President Bio’s Big Five Game Changers.
“We must all, irrespective of our political affiliations, rally behind this Compact. It’s for the benefit of every Sierra Leonean, and political distractions should not cloud its significance,” Koroma stated.
