A French INTERPOL expert, Police Commandant Didier Clergeot, paid a courtesy call on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr William Fayia Sellu, on Monday, 18th May 2026, at Police Headquarters in Freetown ahead of a specialised training programme on border management operations.
According to Commandant Clergeot, the training is aimed at strengthening the capacity of personnel of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) and the Sierra Leone Immigration Department in identifying stolen vehicles, fraudulent passports, and other transnational crimes.
He further disclosed that participants would also be trained on the effective use of the INTERPOL system in reporting and monitoring criminal activities across borders.
The INTERPOL expert noted that the training forms part of ongoing international efforts to support law enforcement agencies in enhancing border security and combating organised crime within the sub-region.
In his response, IGP William Fayia Sellu warmly welcomed and thanked Commandant Clergeot for what he described as a timely and remarkable intervention.
The IGP emphasised the importance of such specialised support, noting that Sierra Leone shares several porous border crossings with neighbouring Liberia and Guinea, making effective border management crucial to national and regional security.
He further stated that the training would greatly enhance the capacity of police officers and other security personnel in detecting stolen vehicles and travel documents, while improving their operational knowledge in the use of INTERPOL tools and systems.
The five-day intensive training programme has officially commenced with the participation of twelve police officers, two immigration officers, representatives from the Sierra Leone Ports Authority, and the National Revenue Authority (NRA).
The Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Mr Sahr Yomba Senesi, represented the IGP during the official opening ceremony of the training programme facilitated by the INTERPOL expert from France.
