Freetown, Sierra Leone – In a key diplomatic exchange aimed at tackling escalating threats in West Africa, Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio convened with Dr. Mamadou Tangara, the African Union Commission’s Special Representative for Mali and the Sahel, on Tuesday morning.
The discussions, held at the presidential office, underscored Bio’s role as the current chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government.
During the session, Bio reiterated his firm dedication to fostering collaborative approaches to regional security challenges.
“This morning, I held a productive meeting with Dr. Mamadou Tangara, the African Union Commission’s Special Representative of the Chairperson in Mali and the Sahel, and Head of MISAHEL,” Bio shared in a statement following the talks.
“As chairman of ECOWAS authority of Heads of State and Government, I reaffirmed my unwavering commitment to constructive engagement on security issues in the Sahel.”
Dr. Tangara, who also leads the African Union Mission for Mali and the Sahel (MISAHEL), joined Bio in highlighting the urgency of enhanced partnerships among African nations and organizations. The pair delved into strategies for countering terrorism, political unrest, and transnational criminal activities that have plagued the Sahel.
Central to the dialogue was the call for unified action and ongoing communication between regional stakeholders to foster lasting peace, stability, and economic progress.
Officials noted that such initiatives are crucial for mitigating spillover effects into neighboring areas, including West Africa.
This meeting aligns with broader African Union-led endeavors to fortify continental responses to security dilemmas, promoting a collective framework for addressing instability across the region.
