Freetown, Sierra Leone – December 29, 2024 – Inspector General of Police William Fayia Sellu has firmly refuted allegations circulating on social media that the Sierra Leone Police are pursuing or harassing journalist and social commentator Thomas Dixon.
In a recent statement, IG Sellu clarified that he has not directed any officer to summon, arrest, or harass Dixon.
The Inspector General acknowledged receiving advice from senior journalists to file a formal complaint with the Independent Media Commission (IMC) if he feels aggrieved by Dixon’s actions.
He indicated that he is currently consulting a private law firm regarding the matter. IG Sellu emphasized that Thomas Dixon is free to continue his daily activities without fear, as there is no police directive against him.
Additionally, IG Sellu addressed concerns involving the Crime Officer at Adelaide Street Police Station in Freetown, stating that the Complaints, Discipline, and Internal Investigations Department (CDIID) is actively investigating the situation.
This clarification comes amid heightened tensions following reports of Dixon’s disappearance after he allegedly received a text message from IG Sellu. Prior to his disappearance, Dixon had criticized the reassignment of a police crime officer who had arrested an individual with connections to influential figures.
The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has expressed concern over the situation, urging both parties to engage in dialogue and calling for the safety and freedom of journalists to be upheld.
As the investigation continues, the public awaits further developments regarding the relationship between the Sierra Leone Police and the media.
