In a significant move towards enhancing Sierra Leone’s energy landscape, the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) has announced a crucial partnership with the Electricity Generation and Transmission Company.
This collaboration aims to interconnect the 10MW Makoth Solar Power Plant with the 161KV Transmission Line (TL) originating from the Bumbuna Hydroelectric Power Plant (HEPP) to Freetown’s 161 KV Substation at Kingtom.
Starting from Friday, August 11th, this groundbreaking endeavor will witness the temporary shutdown of the 161KV Transmission Line on alternate days – Monday, August 14th, and Wednesday, August 16th.
The shutdown will occur between 6:00 am and 2:00 pm, with each session lasting eight hours. During this period, residents of Freetown can expect intermittent power supply as the interconnection process unfolds.
This development marks a pivotal milestone, with the potential to address long-standing electricity supply challenges in the Western Area. Upon successful integration, the Makoth Solar Farm is projected to contribute a robust 10MW to the existing 25MW capacity, signifying a considerable advancement in the country’s energy mix. This transition is expected to not only bolster electricity availability but also contribute to a reduction in CO2 emissions associated with power generation.
While the scheduled interconnection may lead to temporary inconveniences, EDSA emphasizes its commitment to ensuring a reliable and sustainable power supply for its valued customers.
The Authority apologizes for any disruptions caused and assures the public of the long-term benefits that will emerge from this transformative initiative.
As Sierra Leone takes strides towards a greener and more resilient energy future, the interconnection of the Makoth Solar Power Plant stands as a testament to the nation’s dedication to progress and sustainability.
