Renowned Sierra Leonean journalist Thomas Dixon has been reported missing for over 24 hours, prompting growing concern among his family, colleagues, and the wider community.
Dixon’s disappearance follows a contentious interaction with Inspector General of Police (IGP) William Fayia Sellu.
Prior to his disappearance, Dixon engaged in a phone conversation with IGP Sellu, seeking to verify allegations against the police chief. The discussion became heated, with the IGP advising Dixon to submit his concerns in writing. Subsequently, Dixon criticized the IGP on Facebook, accusing him of rescinding court bail and transferring a crime officer involved in the case. Shortly thereafter, Dixon received a text message from IGP Sellu stating, “Thomas, you have crossed the red line.” Since then, Dixon’s family has been unable to contact him or ascertain his whereabouts.
The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has expressed deep concern over Dixon’s disappearance.
SLAJ President Ahmed Sahid Nasralla confirmed that Dixon has not been arrested but remains unaccounted for. Nasralla urged the IGP to ensure Dixon’s safety, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a cordial relationship between the police and the media.
Adding to the confusion, a pro-SLPP blogger claimed to have seen Dixon but did not provide any information about his location. This has only intensified the concerns of Dixon’s family and the public, who are anxiously awaiting updates on his situation.
The incident has sparked a broader conversation about press freedom and the safety of journalists in Sierra Leone. Advocacy groups and citizens alike are calling for a thorough investigation into Dixon’s disappearance and for measures to ensure the protection of journalists carrying out their duties.
As the situation unfolds, the public remains on edge, hoping for Dixon’s safe return and for clarity regarding the circumstances leading to his disappearance.
