In a recent meeting with Vice President Mutale Nalumango in Lusaka, Zambia, former Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma expressed his concern over the surge in military coups across the African continent.
Dr. Koroma emphasized the urgent need to scrutinize and comprehend the underlying causes behind these military interventions.
He Koroma asserted that the rise in military coups could be attributed to the failure of democratic institutions and democratically elected leaders to adequately address the needs of their respective populations.
The former President stressed that once these root causes are thoroughly understood, it will facilitate the efforts of democratically elected leaders to work more effectively to serve their constituents.
Despite significant strides made in promoting democracy in Africa, Dr Koroma lamented that the prevalence of military coups is hindering progress. He underlined the importance of upholding democratic principles and institutions.
Vice President Mutale Nalumango echoed Dr. Koroma’s concerns, particularly focusing on the alarming frequency of military coups in West Africa.
She described these events as a source of shame and emphasized the necessity of striving for stability within a democratic framework across the continent.
Mrs Nalumango called upon Dr Koroma to utilize his influence to inspire the younger generation to have faith in the democratic process, highlighting the importance of nurturing democratic values among Africa’s youth.
The discussion between the two leaders underscored the shared commitment to addressing the challenges posed by military coups and promoting democracy in Africa.
