Freetown, April 18, 2026 — Sierra Leone has recorded a major milestone in its energy sector with the successful transportation of the first turbine for the Nant Power Project to its installation site in Kissy, eastern Freetown.
The operation, led by Deputy Minister of Energy I, Ing. Edmond Nonie, saw the turbine moved from the Queen Elizabeth II Quay through key routes including Jenner Wright and Bai Bureh Roads. Large crowds gathered along the corridor, expressing excitement and optimism as the convoy made its way to the project site.
Speaking after the turbine was safely offloaded, Nonie described the development as a significant step toward addressing electricity challenges in the capital. He said the project, once completed, will generate up to 108 megawatts of power for the Western Area.
“This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to delivering reliable and sustainable electricity for the people of Freetown,” he stated, attributing the revival of the long-delayed project to the leadership of President Julius Maada Bio.
According to the Deputy Minister, the Nant Project had remained stalled for over a decade before being reactivated in 2018. He noted that the first phase is expected to deliver 70 megawatts by May 2027, while full capacity of 108 megawatts will be achieved after the installation of an additional turbine by September 2027.
Project General Manager, Abu Kamara, described the turbine’s arrival as a major breakthrough, adding that installation work is already underway at the site. He commended project partners, including TCQ and Anergi, for their sustained commitment.
Kamara also highlighted the role of key financiers such as the United States Development Finance Corporation and the ECOWAS Bank for Investment, noting that the initiative represents Sierra Leone’s first Independent Power Producer (IPP) project.
Meanwhile, Kaushal Kumar, On-Site Manager for Shapoorji Pallonji, assured that construction and installation timelines remain on track.
The Nant Power Project forms part of broader energy sector reforms aligned with the government’s development agenda, aimed at expanding electricity access and strengthening national energy security.
