In the early hours of Tuesday, April 15, 2025, a fire broke out at the drug store of Sierra Leone’s 34 Military Hospital in Wilberforce, Freetown.
The blaze, which occurred around 4:00 AM, prompted an immediate response from the National Fire Force.
As of the latest reports, there have been no casualties, and firefighters are working diligently to contain the flames. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The 34 Military Hospital, currently undergoing significant upgrades, serves both military personnel and civilians. Recent developments include the construction of a 500-bed facility, a nursing school, and a planned medical school, aiming to transform the hospital into a world-class medical city. This transformation has been championed by First Lady Fatima Maada Bio and supported by international partners, including the Indian Community and the Republic of South Korea. The hospital has also been integral in managing national health emergencies, such as the Ebola outbreak and the COVID-19 pandemic.
The incident comes days after another fire was reported at a hospital in Makeni, Northern Sierra Leone.
These incidents have raised concerns about fire safety measures in healthcare facilities across the country.
