FREETOWN, Sierra Leone – Former presidential candidate and senior opposition figure Dr. Samura Kamara has raised the alarm following a fire incident at the historic State House, adding his voice to growing concerns over a string of mysterious blazes affecting key national landmarks across Sierra Leone.
In a public statement issued earlier today, the 2023 All People’s Congress (APC) presidential contender described the latest fire as part of a troubling pattern, warning that the nation’s heritage and institutional integrity are under serious threat.
The fire, which reportedly occurred within the premises of the 122-year-old State House — the official seat of the presidency and a symbol of Sierra Leone’s post-colonial identity — is currently under investigation. Though the full extent of the damage is yet to be disclosed, the incident has stirred widespread unease.
Dr. Kamara pointed to a series of recent and unexplained fire outbreaks that have affected other national institutions, including the burning of the historic Cotton Tree in central Freetown, fires at the Ministry of Trade in 2020 and the Ministry of Social Welfare in 2019, as well as damage to the Electoral Commission offices in the city’s east end.
He also referenced a spate of fire incidents in the country’s northern farming regions, which he claims have gone largely unaddressed by the authorities.
“These fires are not just isolated accidents,” Dr. Kamara said. “They are striking at the very heart of our national identity and institutional memory. The lack of convincing explanations is deeply unsettling.”
The State House, once the official residence of colonial governors and later prime ministers, holds immense symbolic value for Sierra Leoneans. Dr. Kamara emphasized that its significance goes beyond politics, representing a historical continuity that connects the country’s past, present, and future.
“After the destruction of the Electoral Commission offices and the remnants of the Cotton Tree, this latest fire touches the very soul of our history,” he remarked. “It is time we, as a nation, commit ourselves to preserving our heritage.”
While he acknowledged the ongoing investigation into the cause of the fire, Dr. Kamara urged both the government and the public to adopt proactive measures to protect national institutions and landmarks.
“These are not just buildings,” he stated. “They are the physical embodiments of who we are — our struggles, our democracy, and our unity.”
In a symbolic reflection, Dr. Kamara concluded by referencing the iconic lion statues that guard the entrance to State House, saying they now “stand witness to a growing threat to our national legacy.”
The Minister of Information on Monday confirmed that the fire at State House was caused due to electrical issues and failed to provide details on any suspected foul play. However, the incident has reignited debates about public safety, accountability, and the preservation of Sierra Leone’s cultural and historical assets.
