Freetown, Sierra Leone – In a resounding show of regional support, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has fully endorsed Sierra Leone for a renewed two-year stint on the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) from 2026 to 2027.
The decision emerged from a special session of ECOWAS foreign ministers focused on mediation and security matters.
This backing highlights Sierra Leone’s exemplary performance in its ongoing roles, including its current positions on the United Nations Security Council and the AUPSC, both spanning 2024 to 2025. Officials view it as a nod to the nation’s proactive stance in fostering stability across Africa.
Leading the ECOWAS gathering was Sierra Leone’s Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister, Timothy Musa Kabba, who hailed the unanimous vote as a strong affirmation of his country’s diplomatic prowess.
“This collective approval underscores Sierra Leone’s meaningful contributions to continental peace and security,” Kabba stated.
“I’m profoundly grateful to my fellow ministers and the broader ECOWAS family for placing such steadfast faith in our nation’s direction.”
Kabba also paid tribute to President Julius Maada Bio, who holds the chairmanship of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
“My sincere thanks go to President Bio for his insightful stewardship, which has profoundly influenced our foreign affairs strategy and amplified our influence in global forums,” he remarked.
Additionally, the minister commended the dedication of Sierra Leone’s diplomats, spotlighting the teams in Abuja and Addis Ababa.
“Our esteemed ambassadors and their colleagues have worked relentlessly to advance President Bio’s vision through exceptional advocacy. Their efforts were instrumental in achieving this milestone,” Kabba emphasized.
With this extension, Sierra Leone is poised to deepen its involvement in African initiatives for conflict resolution, preventive diplomacy, and collaborative security efforts, further cementing its status as a key player on the international stage.
