Makeni, Sierra Leone – In a surprising turn of events, one of the fifteen CCTV cameras recently installed to boost security in Makeni has itself been stolen.
The missing device was mounted at the busy Koidu/Plaza Junction, a hotspot for criminal activity and one of the city’s most closely monitored areas.
Authorities say the theft appears to have been carried out by skilled individuals, raising concerns about the growing boldness of criminals in the northern city.
Adding to the security setback, reports indicate that solar-powered streetlights and batteries at the Makeni Government Hospital have also been carted away by unknown persons.
Local police have expressed dismay over the incidents, stressing that the very facilities meant to safeguard the public are now being targeted.
Investigations are ongoing, but no arrests have yet been made.
