SITUATION REPORT ON THE INCIDENT OF ALLEGED FOOD POISONING FROM THE MABELLA COMMUNITY ADMITTED AT THE CONNAUGHT HOSPITAL

Incident Overview:
On the morning of May 18, 2024, an influx of patients from the Mabella community was admitted to Connaught Hospital with complaints suggestive of food poisoning.
Patients presented with symptoms including vomiting, weakness, dizziness, malaise, bloody stool (1), and seizures (2).
Initially, a total of 80 patients (48 females, 32 males, including 26 children) were received and treated. Subsequently, 24 more patients were brought in from the community, with the help of the police, after self-medicating with substances such as palm oil and kerosene.
PATIENT STATUS:
– Total Patients: 104 (Female – 63, Male – 41, Children – 26)
– Critical Cases: 2 patients admitted to ICU, now stable and transferred to step-down unit.
– Deaths: None reported.
– Majority of patients are stable after initial treatment
– All patients positively responding to treatment
RESPONSE EFFORTS:
– Immediate activation of emergency response team
– Swift response and treatment by medical team
– Adequate supplies and consumables secured with support from Ministry leadership, NMSA and MSF-Holland
– Blood, urine, and vomitus samples collected for analysis
– Surveillance staff from DHMT/NPHA involved in data collection
– Police assistance for crowd control and investigation.
– Alleged source of incident traced to a local cookery shop; shop owner and daughters also affected.
CURRENT ACTIONS:
– Ongoing treatment and monitoring of patients
– Continued investigation into source of contamination
– Enhanced surveillance and reporting mechanisms in place
– Collaboration with relevant stakeholders for comprehensive response.
CONCLUSION:
The prompt response of healthcare teams, support from authorities and organizations, and collaborative efforts have been instrumental in managing the alleged food poisoning incident in the Mabella community. As of the latest update, all patients are responding well to treatment, with no reported fatalities.
