FREETOWN — The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has opened an inquiry into an alleged assault on former Inspector General of Police, Michael Ambrose Sovula, following an incident at the Bo Police Station on Sunday, 5 January 2026.
The former police chief is said to be receiving medical care after sustaining injuries during a confrontation reportedly involving a group of youths, as tensions flared in Bumpe-Ngao Chiefdom.
According to a statement from his younger brother, David Sovula, the incident was allegedly instigated by the Member of Parliament for Bumpe-Ngao, Hon. Charles D. Abdulai.
He claimed the lawmaker took part in the confrontation and issued threats against the former IGP. The family has linked the incident to a disputed Paramount Chieftaincy election, recently won by Paramount Chief Alfred Sovula Gbandoma II Esq., the son of the former police boss. The result is reportedly being challenged in court by the MP.
However, police sources in Bo confirmed only that Hon. Abdulai was present at the police station at the time. They alleged that a mobile phone was thrown in the direction of the former IGP but denied reports that he was physically assaulted.
Attempts to reach Hon. Abdulai for comment were unsuccessful. Meanwhile, the Sierra Leone Police are yet to issue an official public statement, as the CID headquarters in Freetown has taken over the investigation.
