Authorities in Saudi Arabia have confirmed that the holy month of Ramadan will begin on the evening of Tuesday, February 17, 2026, corresponding to 29 Sha’ban 1447 AH on the Umm Al Qura calendar.
The announcement, made from Islam’s holiest land, signals the start of the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, during which Muslims around the world observe fasting from dawn to sunset, engage in prayers, and perform acts of charity and spiritual reflection.
For Muslims in Sierra Leone, the declaration from Saudi Arabia is closely followed each year, although local religious authorities typically confirm the start of Ramadan based on moon sightings within the country or regional guidance.
Ramadan is regarded as one of the most sacred periods in Islam, commemorating the time when the first verses of the Qur’an were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It is marked by increased devotion, community gatherings, and support for the less fortunate.
Muslims have been encouraged to prepare spiritually and physically for the fasting period, with prayers that Allah grants them strength, forgiveness, and blessings throughout the holy month.
Many mosques across Sierra Leone are expected to begin special nightly Taraweeh prayers from Tuesday evening.
