Bo, Sierra Leone – April 1, 2026: Rapper and government-appointed Peace Ambassador Alhaji Amadu Bah, popularly known as Boss LAJ has been remanded in custody at Bo Prison after a court denied him bail during a high-profile hearing today.
The case, heard at the Bo Magistrate Court No. 1, pits LAJ and co-accused Ibrahim Koroma (also known as Prezo Koroma) against Kenema City Mayor Thomas Karimu Baio (sometimes referred to as Thomas Baio or Thomas Bayo).
It centers on allegations that LAJ used abusive, insulting, and obscene language against the mayor during a live performance in Bo City in late March 2026.
According to reports, the incident occurred at the end of a show when LAJ reportedly directed derogatory remarks at Mayor Baio, who was not present at the event but later became the complainant. The remarks have sparked widespread debate, with critics arguing that such language from a figure officially designated as Peace Ambassador sets a poor example for the youth and undermines efforts to promote peace and national cohesion.
Background of the Dispute
The feud appears to have deeper roots. Some accounts trace tensions back to a 2024 incident along the Bo-Kenema highway involving LAJ’s team, alleged disrespect toward the mayor, and subsequent calls for an apology that were not fully resolved. The recent Bo performance allegedly reignited the conflict, leading to a criminal summons and, when LAJ failed to appear earlier, a bench warrant for his arrest.
LAJ was reportedly arrested while attempting to leave the country in disguise via Sky Airline. His legal team has previously claimed that no official summons was properly served, but the court proceeded with the matter.
### Court Proceedings and Show of Support
Today’s hearing drew significant attention. Mayor Baio arrived with a large contingent of supporters from Kenema, reportedly transported on free buses organized by community groups and “Voice of Kenema” networks to demonstrate solidarity. The mayor was present in court as the case was adjourned to **April 8, 2026**, with LAJ ordered to remain in custody in the interim.
The matter is being treated as a private complaint by the mayor but has taken on broader dimensions, with some framing it as a case involving the “Mayor and the people of Kenema” against LAJ.
LAJ’s Role as Peace Ambassador
LAJ was appointed Peace Ambassador by President Julius Maada Bio in February 2024 (with some references to related announcements in 2025 context). His mandate includes promoting peace, reconciliation, unity, and tolerance both domestically and internationally. The role was intended to leverage his influence as a popular hip-hop artist with a large youth following.
The current controversy has led to public calls in some quarters for his removal from the position, with detractors questioning whether his actions align with the responsibilities of a peace envoy. Others have defended him, arguing the arrest of a “diplomat” or cultural figure raises concerns about free speech and artistic expression.
Bo City authorities have also suspended all LAJ performances in the area following the incident.
Further updates are expected when the matter resumes on April 8.
