NEW YORK – Former US President Bill Clinton hosted His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio and First Lady Dr. Fatima Maada Bio at a special Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) dinner in New York on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
The exclusive dinner, convened by the 42nd President of the United States, brought together Heads of State, business leaders and philanthropists to mobilise support for global solutions on health, climate and inequality.
President Bio and the First Lady were among the select world leaders invited.
First Lady Fatima Bio, in a statement after the event, said they were honoured by the invitation.
“During the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, I had the honour of joining H.E. President Julius Maada Bio at the Clinton Global Initiative dinner, where we came together in support of an important project and a shared commitment to advancing meaningful change,” she said.
“We were honoured to be hosted by Former President Bill Clinton, whose longstanding commitment to bringing leaders together around solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges continues to inspire.”
The Clinton Global Initiative was founded by Bill Clinton in 2005 and has become one of the biggest platforms during UNGA week where leaders make concrete Commitments to Action.
For President Bio, who is in New York for UNGA 81 where Sierra Leone is serving as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, the CGI engagement provided another platform to project Sierra Leone’s priorities on multilateralism, women’s empowerment and inclusive development – issues closely aligned with First Lady Fatima Bio’s Hands Off Our Girls campaign.
“It was a particularly special evening for President Bio and me — an opportunity to stand together, represent Sierra Leone, and support an initiative that speaks to the importance of partnership, leadership and collective action,” the First Lady added.
