Makeni, Sierra Leone – In a notable display of personal commitment to grassroots football development, Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) President Babadi Kamara officially broke ground on a major rehabilitation project at the iconic Wusum Field on Saturday.
The initiative, fully funded by Kamara himself at a cost of US$95,000, is set to begin implementation on Monday, January 12, 2026. The project focuses on essential improvements to enhance both security and player facilities at the venue, a longstanding hub for football in the Northern Region.
Key components of the upgrade include:
– US$75,000 allocated for the construction of a modern perimeter fence to improve safety and maintain the integrity of the grounds.
– US$20,000 dedicated to building new dressing room facilities, aimed at elevating player welfare and raising overall match-day standards.
During the sod-turning ceremony, President Kamara emphasized that the effort stems from his deep passion for advancing football, empowering local communities, and providing greater opportunities for youth across the country.
He reiterated his ongoing dedication to investing in infrastructure nationwide as part of a wider strategy to grow the sport at every level.
The event drew a strong turnout from key figures in Sierra Leonean football, including SLFA Executive Committee members such as Vice President 1 Ali Badara Tarawallie, Chairmen of regional football associations — Abdul Osman Turay (Northwestern), Brimah Jalloh (Northeastern), and Benedict Joseph Mogba (Southern) — along with ex-officios Mohamed Sorie Jalloh and Haja Ramatulai Kamara, and Acting General Secretary Mohamed Benson Bawoh.
Also in attendance was former SLFA Vice President 2 Ali “Commoner” Kargbo, joined by numerous football administrators, enthusiasts, and community supporters. Their presence underscored Wusum Field’s vital role as a central venue for sporting activities and a source of regional pride for Makeni and the broader Northeast.
This personal investment by the SLFA leader highlights continued momentum in efforts to modernize football facilities in Sierra Leone, building on Kamara’s reputation for hands-on support of the game since taking office.
