Freetown, Sierra Leone – Authorities in Sierra Leone have arrested a key suspect linked to the November 26, 2023, coup attempt that rocked the nation’s capital and other parts of the country.
The Sierra Leone Police confirmed the arrest of Inspector Joseph Dumbuya, also known as “Jose,” at Freetown International Airport. Military personnel apprehended him at the FIA Gate before handing him over to the FIA Police Division for further investigation.
The coup attempt on November 26 involved coordinated attacks on military armories, barracks, prisons, and police stations in Freetown, resulting in violent clashes with security forces. The unrest led to the deaths of 21 individuals, including 14 soldiers, and facilitated the escape of approximately 2,200 prisoners. Authorities have characterized these events as a failed attempt to overthrow the democratically elected government of President Julius Maada Bio.
In the aftermath, the government has undertaken extensive operations to apprehend those involved. As of early December, at least 57 individuals, predominantly military personnel, had been arrested in connection with the coup attempt. Among the detainees is Amadu Koita, a former soldier and bodyguard to ex-President Ernest Bai Koroma, who was apprehended on December 4.
The arrest of Inspector Dumbuya underscores the ongoing commitment of Sierra Leone’s security forces to identify and prosecute individuals implicated in the coup attempt.
Authorities continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and report any information that could assist in ensuring national stability and security. The government has reiterated its commitment to maintaining stability and bringing all those involved to justice.
