Sierra Leone’s main opposition party, the All Peoples Congress (APC) has voiced grave concerns regarding the recent detention of Mr. Abu Bakarr Boxx Konteh and several others in Guinea.
The party made these concerns in a formal communique signed by Secretary General of the party Lansana Dumbuya Esq, and addressed to the Guinean Ambassador to Sierra Leone.
Dated March 29th, 2024, the letter from the APC underscores the imperative of ensuring fair legal representation and safeguarding the human rights of Mr. Konteh and his detained associates. It firmly asserts that unless substantial evidence is provided, Mr. Konteh’s right to asylum in Guinea should be vigorously upheld.
Moreover, the APC invokes Guinea’s historical tradition of providing sanctuary to those fleeing political turmoil, echoing sentiments previously articulated by Guinea’s leader, General Mamadou Doumbouya, during the 78th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The APC calls for a meeting with the Guinean Ambassador to deliberate on Mr. Konteh’s predicament and offer their insights on the case.
The APC further implores Guinean authorities to expedite their response to this pressing issue with compassion and urgency. It stresses the significance of transparent communication and mutual respect in reaching a resolution that honors the principles of both nations.
In addition to the Guinean Ambassador, a copy of the letter has been forwarded to Maitre Lancine Sylla, the legal representative in Guinea for Abu Bakarr Boxx Konteh.
The APC eagerly awaits a constructive response from Guinean authorities and looks forward to engaging in diplomatic dialogue to address this critical matter promptly.
Konteh, a prominent Regional Organising Secretary of the APC, reportedly sought refuge in Guinea to evade political persecution under the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) government.
