FREETOWN, 6th October 2026 – A shipping container caught fire this afternoon at the Queen Elizabeth II Quay, ‘Water Quay’ in Cline Town, Freetown, triggering panic inside Sierra Leone’s main commercial port.
According to eyewitnesses, the container suddenly went up in flames, with thick black smoke rising high above the quay and spreading across the Cline Town area. Port workers, clearing agents and truck drivers were seen rushing away from the danger zone as others moved in to help contain the blaze.
Emergency teams from the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA) responded swiftly and succeeded in putting out the fire before it could spread to nearby containers, warehouses and fuel storage areas.
No lives were lost and no injuries have been reported so far.
The cause of the fire is not yet known and an investigation has been launched to determine what triggered the container to ignite and to assess the value of goods destroyed.
The Queen Elizabeth II Quay handles almost all of Sierra Leone’s sea imports and exports, including food, fuel, machinery and building materials, making fire safety at the facility a major concern.
Port operations, which were briefly disrupted during the emergency response, have now returned to normal.
