The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, has issued a firm reminder to Members of Parliament to respect the 10:00 a.m. start time for plenary sittings, warning that continued lateness will no longer be tolerated.
Addressing the House, Speaker Thomas said punctuality is crucial to maintaining efficiency and protecting the credibility of the Legislature.
He commended MPs who have consistently demonstrated “exemplary dedication” by arriving on time, but cautioned that others must improve.
“When we start on time, we send a clear message that the work of the people matters,” he emphasised.
In a move aimed at tightening discipline, the Speaker announced that he will begin publicly naming MPs who are not seated when proceedings start.
He clarified that the measure is not intended to shame legislators but to ensure full participation in decisions that affect the nation.
The reminder comes as Parliament prepares for an intensive period of legislative work—including bills, oversight activities and budget scrutiny. With the Speaker’s renewed enforcement of parliamentary privileges and attendance rules, the House is expected to see more orderly and timely sittings in the coming months.
